Members commit to noticing one need a month in the public spaces around them, twelve times a year, and to make an improvement in a moderately mundane manner. Contact us if you’d like to become a member of the board.
Work practices
- Be aware and observe the spaces around you, and notice the places where a little care is needed.
A missing nail or screw, a misaligned gate latch, a lopsided sign, or some pesky weeds in an inbetween space that no one takes responsibility for. Consider the skills, tools, resources and and interests you have and how you might intervene.
- Plan and prepare your intervention.
All works carried out should be robust, fit for purpose, and moderately mundane. Include a creative touch that signifies that the works haven't been completed by the standard maintenance contractors. For example paint your replacement screw a bright colour or add some personality in another way. Consider the tools you need, any other materials and the best time of day to complete the works. Where possible use salvaged or second hand materials. Don't take on anything risky, too complex or requiring specialist skills or training. Post those ones to snap send solve, and leave that stuff for the relevant authorities.
- Implemention
Choose a suitable time to implement works when you are of least impact to others. Safety first, so wear your MMBW hi viz, and seek out other members on the reddit community if you need help or advice . If you’re asked about the work you’re doing, introduce the MMBW and our aim to make small improvements to the public spaces around us, and redirect people to the website. If you’re asked to leave, quickly pack up your equipment and move on, and log the works as incomplete.
- Tag and document your work.
Attach a completed works tag identifying works carried out, your ID number and the MMBW.works web address. Take a before and after photo, ideally from the same position for comparison purposes. Record the coordinates of the intervention (using Google maps or similar), the intervention, and the member ID of the person carrying out the work for inclusion on the board of works database.
Log your job on the MMBW submission form and we'll get it added to the M.M.B.W instagram page soon as possible. Share your intervention on your own socials if that's what you're into, and tag @M.M.B.W
